New stuff on or around the Hill

So besides Molly Mallones, and the new Greek place opening on 8th there’s a new place on U Street.

Policy, a new lounge on 14th Street NW, opens today, billing itself as a “modern interpretation of the classic diner.” Chef Brian Murphy (formerly of L’Auberge Chez Francois and Palena) takes the lead on a seasonal menu that fuses global cuisines with classics into menu items such as madras curry lamb sliders and kobe hot dogs.
The post Sex and the City set can enjoy some frou-frou cocktails and a DJ-ed lounge. Signature cocktails include the Truthtini (green tea and lemongrass martini), Libertini (a twist on a mango caipirinha), and Lovetini (chocolate martini with a cinnamon lollipop).

From Clubs to Crocs

March 11th, 2009 · No Comments

steering-wheel-club
As I take a stroll around Capitol Hill with my Daughter in tow, I just laugh to myself at how the community is changing. There was a time when I walked by parked cars and would see a colorful assortment of steering wheel clubs. I even went as far as putting my club on my steering wheel although I parked in my garage.
Capitol Hill is changing…

Now when I take a stroll around Capitol Hill with my Daughter in tow, I just laugh to myself at how the community has changed. Now when I walk by people I see a colorful assortment of crocs on their feet.  My 2 year old daughter goes as far as putting her crocs on just to walk around in the house.

Capitol Hill has changed…

Just off the Hill…

January 6th, 2009 · No Comments

The First Tuesday of the month has become an institution on U St.  Each first Tuesday of the month for nearly five years a group of conscientious professionals have met to relax, unwind and share their resources over drinks and food.

I started the group when I was just out of grad school and full of energy and looking to find a way to connect with my public health colleagues in other ways that would build community.  At the time, I was going in and out of many of the DC public and charter skills managing HIV prevention efforts. Through those efforts and community meetings, I quickly built a network of other professionals that were involved in the adolescent HIV prevention, treatment and care world.

All too often we would pass each other at meetings and inquire, “When are we going to get together for happy hour?” When never materialized.

However one day two colleagues of mine, Irwin Royster at Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington and Jennifer Augustine at Advocates for Youth, and I ended up eating and drinking somewhere. We actually seemed to enjoy each other outside the professional world.

“Let’s do this again and invite others,” was the consensus.

First Tuesdays was born. Every first Tuesday of the month the group meets. We always meet at Jojo’sat 1518 U St. NW three blocks from the U St. Metro. Each month a different local community-based organization is featured where they share who they are with attendees.

This month in recognition of National Mentoring Month, we feature the fantastic work of Mentoring Today.  Started several years ago by two American University law students, Penelope Spain and Hill resident Whitney Louchheim, Mentoring Today is the only organization focusing on reintegrated formerly incarcerated youth back into the community.  Located in Anacostia, Mentoring Today links DC youth incarcerated in Oak Hill Youth Center (read detention center or prison) with dedicated positive mentors. The mentors are matched with the youth when the youth have a few more months before being released.  Mentors visit the young men at Oak Hill (just outside Laurel, MD) each Thursday for three months and then stay connected with them for a year in the community after their release.

Mentoring Today also works with the youth’s families.  Chevy Chase Bank on the Hill and Realtors at Long & Foster Capitol Hill are developing financial education series.  Guest speakers are always welcomed.

Learn more about Mentoring Today at First Tuesdays…just off the Hill.

First Tuesdays is now one of the stable of events and supportive activities of arts and community sponsored in partnership with my long-time friend and creative partner Khadijah Ali-Coleman through our collaboration Liberated Muse Productions.

Bonjour! Welcome to Pet-i-Greet!

January 4th, 2009 · No Comments

Happy New Year! Nouvelle année heureuse!
Welcome to Pet-i-Greet! I am your host, François.  I am your host, Francois!

As a new resident on the Hill, I am seeking a luxury hotel for my discriminating out-of-town companions for the Inauguration.   They require a Bark Street Journal every mourning, and Yappy Hour each evening to network with other guests!  Any suggestions?

Oh, by the way, any suggestions on a location for grooming?  After all the moving and setting up my new home, I truly need my nails done and a clip.  Don’t you agree?

Long & Foster Capitol Hill
Long & Foster Capitol Hill

The Capitol Hill Office of Long & Foster is located on D St., across from the Eastern Market Metro stop on the Orange Line.

For the most part, our agents are residents of this community, some of them have been here decades, and several are lifetime residents of the District of Columbia.

At Long & Foster’s Capitol Hill Office  we do more than simply “sell houses.”  The agents here are part of the fabric of this community.  We work, play and worship here.  If you are interested in learning more about life as a resident of Capitol Hill, it would be our privilege as well as our pleasure to introduce you to our neighborhood.

Our door is open 7 days a week and we personally invite you to stop in and ask a question - about real estate,  restaurants, directions or where to find a handyman.  We look forward to keeping you up-to-date with the happenings on The Hill, and we hope if you are living here, you will share your news with us as well.

We are your neighborhood Realtors® and we would like to get to know you!
